Lacey is a military town. Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Fort Lewis, and DuPont are all a short drive up I-5, and a meaningful share of our patients are active-duty service members, veterans, retirees, or family members. We see firsthand how military life shapes dental care — the demanding schedules, the moves, the gap years between dental homes, and the questions that come up about which insurance covers whom.
This post is the deeper story behind our Military Dentist service page: who leads the practice, why his background matters for military patients, and how the specific insurance landscape works for service members and dependents in our area.
Dental care at Lacey Smiles is led by Dr. John Hodges, DDS, who served in the U.S. Naval Dental Corps earlier in his career. During that service he completed a prosthodontic rotation at Pearl Harbor and was honored to serve on the military’s MIA identification team — forensic dental work supporting the recovery and identification of service members lost in past conflicts.
That experience left a permanent mark on how he practices: a disciplined, detail-focused approach, and a real understanding of military culture, expectations, and pace. For patients who have served — or whose family has — talking to a dentist who has worn the uniform is different from talking to one who hasn’t.
Today, Dr. Hodges is the resident oral surgery and implant expert at Lacey Smiles, with experience that includes oral surgery and tooth extractions, dental implant placement and restoration, complex restorative dentistry, and long-term implant maintenance care — all delivered under one roof, which means fewer outside referrals and a more coordinated experience for active-duty patients working around training and operational schedules.
One of the most common reasons military patients hesitate to schedule dental care off-base is uncertainty about coverage. The plan landscape is layered: active-duty service members, their dependents, and retirees often sit on different programs. Here’s what we accept:
• TRICARE — we are in-network with TRICARE for eligible military patients and their families.
• United Concordia (UCCI) — commonly used for military family members and dependents.
• Active Duty Dental Program (ADDP) — we accept ADDP and assist with benefit verification and scheduling.
• Most PPO dental insurance plans — which matters when a spouse or dependent carries different coverage than the service member.
Our team is happy to verify benefits and explain what your plan covers before any treatment begins. If you have a question about whether something is covered — ask before scheduling, not after. (You can also review our patient information and insurance details.)
This is one of the most common questions we hear from military families, and the answer is straightforward: that’s a normal situation, and it doesn’t mean splitting your dental care across two offices.
Because we accept most PPO plans in addition to the military-specific networks, a service member on TRICARE or ADDP and a spouse on a different employer-sponsored PPO can both be patients at the same office — with the same team and the same records. We’ll handle the benefit verification on each plan separately and provide a clear written estimate before treatment.
Military patients often have narrow windows to handle dental work. The fewer offices you have to coordinate between, the better. At Lacey Smiles, we provide:
• Preventive care — cleanings, comprehensive exams, and treatment planning
• Restorative dentistry — tooth-colored fillings, crowns, and bridges
• Dental implants — placement, restoration, and ongoing implant maintenance
• Oral surgery — tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal
• Sedation dentistry / general anesthesia, in partnership with Elite Anesthesia so multiple procedures can be completed comfortably in a single visit
• Cosmetic dentistry — veneers, bonding, and teeth whitening
That breadth matters more for military patients than most: when leave or recovery time creates a window to consolidate care, having one office that can handle the surgery, the restorations, and the sedation is the difference between getting it done and pushing it to next year.
If you are searching for a dentist near JBLM, Fort Lewis, or DuPont, our office is a short drive from base. Many military families choose us because we offer TRICARE, United Concordia, and ADDP-friendly care, comprehensive services in one location, and a welcoming environment for adults and children.
Lacey Smiles is currently welcoming new military patients. We are in-network with TRICARE, United Concordia, and the Active Duty Dental Program, and accept most PPO plans for spouses and dependents on different coverage.
